Rooms to discover

studio

The north-west end of the hall, under the north light: a long fitting table, a layout table, a steel easel, a leaning mirror at the fitting place, a black wall for portraits, and a chain of mirror discs turning from the old crane rail. Where she works and where people come to be seen.

long table

The south-east end of the hall, under three globe pendants: a long steel table with eight chairs where fittings are spread out in the day and dinners are eaten in the evening.

listening room

An aubergine room with shelves of books and records, two tall speakers, low chairs, a trunk for a table and a chaise daybed under a heavy curtain. This is where she is when the working day is over: worn-in and unobserved.

All 20 spaces
courtyard
A walled yard of granite setts in front of the old freight doors, with two silver birches in steel planters, an oak bench against the north wall and a drum brazier. A tall neighbouring wall closes the far end.
entry airlock
A small black room just inside the loading door, with a mirror, a console for keys and parcels, and a coat tree. A narrow slot in the partition shows only a slice of the hall before you step through.
cloakroom
A narrow room off the airlock with a rolling rail of dresses and coats, a bench and a rack of shoes.
guest toilet
A small tiled toilet off the kitchen with a basin, a tall mirror and a window to the courtyard.
material store
A tall narrow store off the studio with steel racks of cloth bolts and mirror panels, and crates of offcuts.
kitchen
The south-west end of the hall: a long island with bar stools, a run of steel cupboards under the south windows, a professional range and a tall refrigerator. Where the morning happens.
long table
The south-east end of the hall, under three globe pendants: a long steel table with eight chairs where fittings are spread out in the day and dinners are eaten in the evening.
promenade
The long walk down the middle of the hall, from the airlock to the heavy door at the far end. Whoever walks it is seen from the table, the stage and the studio.
studio
The north-west end of the hall, under the north light: a long fitting table, a layout table, a steel easel, a leaning mirror at the fitting place, a black wall for portraits, and a chain of mirror discs turning from the old crane rail. Where she works and where people come to be seen.
portrait wall
The stretch of the studio's west wall under the big black canvas. Anyone who stops here is already in a photograph, with the north light falling straight on them and the whole studio facing them.
stage
A raised oak platform at the north-east end of the hall, with a deep sofa, lounge chairs, a grand piano and a wood stove, framed by heavy velvet curtains that can be drawn like a proscenium.
corridor
A narrow passage at the end of the promenade, behind the heavy door, hung with small framed drawings. The studio ends at the door; the home begins in this passage.
listening room
An aubergine room with shelves of books and records, two tall speakers, low chairs, a trunk for a table and a chaise daybed under a heavy curtain. This is where she is when the working day is over: worn-in and unobserved.
library and stair
A tall room of shelves with a chair and a brass side table, and the steel stair that climbs along the east wall to the floor above.
guest room
A bottle-green room with a wide bed, bedside lamps, a mirrored wardrobe and a reeded-glass screen to the hall that shows silhouettes and no more. A door in the corner goes straight into the bathroom.
bathroom
A black marble bathroom with a freestanding tub, a glass shower, a double vanity and a heated towel rail. Doors to the corridor and to the guest room.
bedroom
Her bedroom on the galerie, behind a long window over the hall. A king bed with a padded leather head against the east wall, two chairs facing the glass, a screen to dress behind, and doors to the dressing room, the bath and the small study.
dressing room
A mirrored room of three wardrobes, a rail of this week's clothes and a velvet bench, where she changes from one register to the other.
bedroom bathroom
Her own black marble bathroom, with a freestanding tub, a double vanity and a tall mirror.
study
A small room at the head of the stair with a writing desk under the north window, a loveseat, a bookcase and a fig tree. The door to the bedroom is on its west side.
